VITAL CHROMA: Michelle Weddle

Dimmitt Contemporary Art is pleased to announce VITAL CHROMA, an exhibition of new paintings by Denver-based artist Michelle Weddle at our Houston location. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 5:00 - 8:00pm. The exhibition will be on view through December 2, 2023.

For this exuberant set of 8 new paintings, Weddle explores the strength of the sloping line to evoke a thrilling sense of motion and tension within her compositions. She establishes intrinsically potent jewel tones as the indisputable color story with which to communicate this visual language of dynamic energy. Utilizing bold brushstrokes in tones of milky turquoise, fire opal, dark sapphire, and warm amber, she seeks to activate each canvas with concision and grace. Often within the format of the stable and resolute square.

Characteristic of her recent work, enticingly thick layers of paint serve as the counterpoint to the thinner underpaintings of bold strokes that predominates each composition. From a distance, the voluminous brushstrokes appear dimensional while the surrounding forms appear flat. Upon closer inspection, the opposite is true. This unexpected reversal of form and function is an ironic and alluring twist that engages the viewer from one work to the next.

Michelle Weddle (b. 1983 Houston, Texas) received a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, Austin in 2007, with concentrations in painting, drawing, sculpture and serigraphy.
