NAKED SKIES: Robert Roth

Dimmitt Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Naked Skies, a solo exhibition of paintings by artist Robert Roth, June 13 through July 25, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday June 13, 6-8 pm. Following Roth’s 2018 exhibition “Recent Landscapes,” the painter returns to present some of his newest works with extraordinary focus on skies. In Roth’s estimation, skies are a forceful element in nature, which allow him great compositional variety in handling form and color. He has spoken of their sense of vastness, and his fascination with this infinite quality is evident in horizon lines placed low his compositions which are dominated by images of clouds and hazy atmosphere. Throughout the canvases, the viewer sees Roth’s adeptness at suggesting light, both atmospheric light in the top registers, and reflected light at and below the horizon lines. The blending and layering of lighter toned pigments helps to create this effect, as well as to evoke mood, with visual harmony as a primary feature. “My paintings are really abstract studies of skies and the landscape just happens to sneak in,” says Roth.

Roth grew up in the seaside village of Cold Spring Harbor, New York. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design where he studied painting under Thomas Sgouros and spent time with Claes Oldenberg. He is particularly inspired by the work of Degas, Vuillard, Diebenkorn, and Picasso. Roth’s paintings are held in public and private collections including The Ritz Carlton, American Express, The New Yorker, Columbia University and Northeastern University. He has received numerous honors, including a Silver Medal from The Cleveland Museum of Art and two medals from The Heckscher Museum in New York. Roth spends much of his summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard and resides in his 1850’s farmhouse and barn studio in Northeast Ohio.
