Dimmitt Contemporary Art is pleased to announce REMEDIES, a solo exhibition by Oakland-based artist Carmen McNall. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 6:00 - 8:00pm at our Austin gallery. The exhibition will be on view through May 31, 2025.
REMEDIES explores the spiritual and regenerative qualities of nature’s gifts, both physically and on a deeper emotional level. Female figures embody healers and caregivers, where viewers are welcomed into moments of nurture and comfort. Grounded poses root them like the earth, while quilt-like patterns weave generational knowledge across their forms, echoing landscapes within the body. Sacred fruits, herbs, and flowers symbolize
medicinal offerings, reinforcing the idea that women, like these vessels of nature, hold ancient wisdom and the power to heal.
McNall’s visual language is deeply rooted in handmade craftsmanship. The dynamic interplay of bold color, organic texture, and rhythmic carving emphasizes the connection between body and landscape, reinforcing the idea that both are vessels for memory, intuition, and healing energy. McNall’s distinctive practice blends painting with intricate wood-carving, creating richly textured surfaces that reveal the process behind each piece. Her faceless female figures evoke goddess-like muses, exuding strength, confidence, and divine feminine energy. Set within vibrant, patterned landscapes that transcend time, these figures invite the viewers to be held in a space of tenderness and restoration.
Carmen McNall holds a BFA in printmaking and painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. Her work has been exhibited across the United States.
