JOHN HATHORN BIOGRAPHY
BIOGRAPHY
The Cardinalis Sketches (from the Latin cardinal is and the English cardinal) is an ongoing body of work initiated in 2011 in which the color red, formally and conceptually, serves as a dominant stimulus. While exploring linguistic references to subjects as diverse as botany, ornithology, and theology, the series underscores a sustained interest in selected artists for whom color and the sensuality of the human figure were integral. Chief among these individuals are the seventeenth century Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens and the nineteenth century French painter Eugene Delacroix. The paintings reflect a tracing of felt experience — exploring relationships of image to language and sensation to form. The notion of the sketch is important in so far as the paintings were produced with the intention of maintaining a sense of immediacy and the spontaneity of rapid notation.
